- 01Yes, research confirms that teletherapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for improving skills in targeted areas. You can explore more details in these studies: [ASHA Journal](https://pubs.asha.org/doi/10.1044/2017_AJSLP-16-0070) and [PubMed](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25945200/).
- 02Your child will connect to therapy using a secure platform on a computer, tablet, or smartphone—think of it like a video call. Sessions mirror in-person therapy, starting with a review of goals, followed by engaging activities and interactive games tailored to your child’s needs. We encourage children to share their interests, which we incorporate into sessions to make learning fun and effective. At Bright Path Speech, we celebrate every success with positive encouragement!
- 03To get started, you’ll need a reliable internet connection and a desktop or laptop computer (preferred) with a webcam and microphone—most smart devices like tablets or smartphones work too! Choose a quiet, distraction-free space for sessions. And here’s a bonus: on a nice day, you can even take your session outdoors with your device! Pro tip: Keep your device plugged in to avoid interruptions during therapy.
- 04Many children show interest and desire to engage through technology. For many, the use of technology in therapy can assist in attention to task. However, telepractice may not be appropriate in all circumstances or for all clients and this can be discussed at your consultation as to whether it is an appropriate service delivery model for your child's specific needs. Some client characteristics that may potentially adversely impact their ability to interact or engage via telepractice include the following: • Physical and sensory characteristics, including hearing ability; visual ability (e.g., ability to see material on a computer monitor); manual dexterity (e.g., ability to operate a keyboard if needed), and physical endurance (e.g., sitting tolerance) • Cognitive, behavioral, and/or motivational characteristics, including level of cognitive functioning; ability to maintain attention; willingness of the client and family/caregiver (as appropriate) to receive or assist with services via telepractice • Client’s access to support resources, including availability of technology (e.g., computer, adequate bandwidth, webcam); an appropriate environment for telepractice (e.g., quiet room with minimal distractions)
- 05Yes! Bright Path Speech, LLC is in compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regarding the use, storage, and transmission of client Protected Health Information (PHI) during teletherapy. Within the Welcome Packet you'll find these forms to sign.
